Getting Started
What are the main ways to work with Dr. Deb Berman
Dr. Deb offers three core paths: the 8‑Session Foundations Track (online psychotherapy for New York residents), the 6‑Session Relationship/Sexuality Reset (relationship and sexuality coaching worldwide), and the 3‑Month Transition Navigation Package (transition coaching worldwide).
How do I know which path is right for me?
If you live in New York and want clinical psychotherapy for anxiety, burnout, trauma, or grief, the 8‑Session Foundations Track is usually the best fit. If you want help with your relationship or sexuality, choose the Relationship/Sexuality Reset; if you’re in a big life transition (relocation, career shift, divorce, illness, spiritual change), choose the Transition Navigation Package.
What happens after I fill out the booking form?
You’ll receive a reply within about two business days with either a link to schedule a brief consultation call with Dr. Deb or referrals if she is not the right fit or currently full. During the call you’ll clarify your goals, confirm the appropriate path (therapy vs coaching), and, if it’s a match, agree on next steps.
Therapy vs. Coaching
What’s the difference between psychotherapy and coaching with Dr. Deb?
Psychotherapy focuses on mental health, trauma, long‑standing patterns, and emotional healing, and can only be offered to New York residents under her LCSW license. Coaching is future‑focused and goal‑oriented—centered on transitions, relationships, and sexuality—and is available to clients worldwide as a non‑clinical service.
I’m not sure if I need therapy or coaching—can you help me decide?
Yes, the consultation call is specifically designed to help clarify this. Dr. Deb will ask about your goals, symptoms, and location and will recommend psychotherapy, coaching, or a different resource based on your situation.
Can I do both therapy and coaching with Dr. Deb at the same time?
In some cases, New York–based clients may work with Dr. Deb in psychotherapy while also engaging in a clearly defined coaching focus, but ethical and legal boundaries come first. During your consultation, she will discuss whether it makes sense to combine roles or to keep therapy and coaching with different providers.
Location, format & Logistics
Where is Dr. Deb Berman licensed to provide psychotherapy?
Yes, many clients work with Dr. Deb through coaching from Europe, the U.S., and other regions, especially expats, nomads, and people in major transitions. In those cases you would enroll in a coaching package rather than psychotherapy.
Can I work with Dr. Deb if I live outside New York or outside the U.S.?
Yes, the consultation call is specifically designed to help clarify this. Dr. Deb will ask about your goals, symptoms, and location and will recommend psychotherapy, coaching, or a different resource based on your situation.
How long are sessions, and how often do we meet?
Individual therapy sessions are usually 50 minutes once a week in the 8‑Session Foundations Track. Relationship/Sexuality Reset sessions are 75 minutes weekly or biweekly, and Transition Navigation sessions are spread over about three months, often every other week.
Packages, payment and policies
How much do the packages cost?
Each package has a clear fee structure (for example, a set fee for the 8‑session therapy track, 6‑session relationship/sexuality coaching, and 3‑month transition coaching), which will be shared on the booking page and confirmed during your consultation. Payment is typically made in installments or prior to sessions, depending on the package.
Do you accept insurance?
Dr. Deb is generally an out‑of‑network provider, meaning she does not bill insurance directly; however, New York psychotherapy clients may receive documentation they can submit to their insurance for possible reimbursement, depending on their plan. Coaching is not covered by insurance.
What is your cancellation policy?
Sessions usually require 24–48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule, or the full fee for that session is charged; specific details will be outlined in your intake paperwork.
Focus area and fit
What kinds of issues do you work with most often?
Common focuses include anxiety, burnout, grief, trauma, big life transitions, expat/nomad challenges, spiritual or religious injury, relationship conflict, non‑monogamy, kink, and sexuality questions. Many clients come because they feel “high‑functioning but overwhelmed” or like their life no longer fits who they are.
Do you work with couples, polycules, and blended families?
Yes, Dr. Deb offers relationship and sexuality work with couples, polycules, and other relationship constellations, as well as blended and chosen families. This is typically offered as coaching through the Relationship/Sexuality Reset package, accessible worldwide.
Are you sex-positive and gender-affirming?
Yes, Dr. Deb is explicitly sex, sexuality, alternative‑relationship, and gender positive, and welcomes clients exploring kink/BDSM, non‑monogamy, and gender journeys in a non‑shaming, informed space.
Is this a good fit if I’m going through a spiritual or religious shift?
Many of Dr. Deb’s clients are rethinking inherited beliefs, healing from spiritual or religious injury, or weaving together new forms of meaning. Her background in ministry and counseling allows for nuanced conversations about faith, doubt, and spirituality alongside psychological work.
Practicalities and safety
Is what I share confidential?
Psychotherapy clients in New York are protected by standard confidentiality laws with a few legal exceptions (such as safety concerns or court orders), which will be explained in your consent forms. Coaching clients also receive a clear confidentiality agreement, recognizing that coaching is not a medical service.
What if my partner won’t come to relationship work?
While the Relationship/Sexuality Reset is designed for partners together, it is sometimes possible to begin with individual relationship‑focused coaching to support you in making decisions and changing your own patterns. This can be discussed in your consultation.
What if I am in crisis or thinking about harming myself or someone else?
Dr. Deb’s practice is not an emergency service and cannot provide crisis response. If you are in immediate danger, please call your local emergency number, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact a crisis hotline in your area before reaching out for an appointment.
